KINDERGARTEN COUNTDOWN CAMP

Kindergarten Countdown Camp is a free summer program for children who have had little to no preschool experience. The camp helps children feel confident, comfortable, and ready for their first day of kindergarten by introducing key skills like letter and number recognition, writing their name, and learning classroom rules and routines. Students also enjoy breakfast and lunch each day, receive a backpack and school supplies, and learn in a supportive, fun environment. Camps are offered at LSC and TSC during late May and June, making it easy for families to find a session that works.

READ TO SUCCEED

Read to Succeed is a reading program that invites community members to spend one hour per week in local classrooms helping children develop and improve literacy skills.

We all have a stake in local students’ success. Improving student reading skills can lead to increased school achievement. The strength of our future workforce depends on students becoming successful today. We know poor early reading skills are clearly linked to high school graduation. In fact, students who excel at reading by the end of third grade and demonstrate regular school attendance are 90 percent more likely to graduate from high school. Our community recognizes the opportunity to support our local schools and students. Will you join us?

VITA (VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE)

United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) helps working families and individuals prepare their tax returns at no cost, either through free self-prep services or in-person appointments with IRS-certified volunteers. Households with an income of $84,000 or less can file their taxes for free at MyFreeTaxes.com or schedule an in-person appointment at United Way of Greater Lafayette to have a volunteer prepare their return (some limitations apply). Appointment scheduling opens each January.

Since the program began in 2010, it has grown to serve more members of our community each year. Volunteers have prepared more than 35,000 tax returns for over 16,000 clients, helping those clients save an estimated $4.2 million in tax preparation fees. Overall, the program has returned over $24.1 million in refunds to Tippecanoe County.

Would YOU like to help put money back into the pockets of Greater Lafayette residents? Volunteer opportunities range from schedulers to tax preparers, and no experience is necessary. Free training and resources are provided to all volunteers. Click the button below for additional information.

Please note that Purdue University International Students seeking tax preparation services must file their federal taxes through Purdue’s Glacier system, as United Way no longer provides this service. You can find more information about the process here.
