WHAT IS THE POVERTY SIMULATION?

The Poverty Simulation is an interactive experience designed to help participants better understand what it’s like to live with limited resources and constant financial pressure. It challenges assumptions and encourages meaningful conversation by placing participants in real-life scenarios faced by individuals and families trying to make it through the month.

In Tippecanoe County, many of our neighbors face daily challenges such as food insecurity, housing instability, lack of reliable transportation, unemployment or underemployment, domestic violence, and difficulty affording basic necessities. The Poverty Simulation brings these realities to life in a powerful way that goes beyond statistics and stories.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

During the simulation, each participant takes on the role of a person living in poverty. These roles are based on real family situations and reflect the complex decisions many families must make every day.

Participants work through a simulated “month,” navigating systems, managing limited resources, and trying to keep their families fed, housed, and safe. The experience is designed to be immersive, challenging, and eye-opening.

It’s important to note: this is a simulation, not a game. The goal is not to “win,” but to gain perspective, build empathy, and better understand the barriers faced by many in our community.
