United Way of Greater Lafayette mobilizes caring citizens to invest their resources in our community where they are needed most.
We first work to understand the needs in our community. Then we fund effective programs and launch new initiatives that address the root causes.
Every program we support must demonstrate measurable results. This ensures your contributions make the greatest possible community impact.

United Way and Weed & Seed Partnership Accepting Pre-Applications for IDA Program
The United Way of Greater Lafayette and the Downtown Lafayette Weed & Seed Initiative are currently accepting pre-applications for their individual development accounts (IDAs) program. The organizations were awareded federal grants to support individual development accounts (IDAs) for low income families and individuals in the Weed & Seed community.
The Lafayette project, following the lead of other successful IDA projects, will match each saved dollar with three dollars. Over five years, up to 48 families will either purchase their first home or attend Ivy Tech programs. The program will move participants, mostly working parents, up the socioeconomic ladder while decreasing the likelihood of poverty for their children.
The program features two types of matched savings plans:
One-income participants can save towards education at Ivy Tech Community College. With a savings cap of $1,250, the saver will amass $5,000 to purchase tuition, books, and lab fees because of the matching funds.
Two-income participants can save towards the purchase of a home in the Downtown Weed and Seed area. With a $4,000 ($2,000 each) household savings cap, the savers will accrue $16,000 for a down payment and closing costs for a first-home purchase.
“This is an exciting big step on the United Way journey of creating lasting change for our community,” said James Taylor, Executive Director of Greater Lafayette United Way. “It’s a very real opportunity to alter the course of generational poverty for those who participate.”
The IDA program is slated to begin accepting applications in January, 2009.

United Way Partnership helps Families with Prescription Costs
United Way of Greater Lafayette is working with the FamilyWize Partnership to distribute prescription drug discount cards throughout the community. This program is designed to lower the cost of prescription medication. When you present the card with a prescription to a participating pharmacy, you pay either the discounted or the pharmacy's retail price, whichever is lower. And the beauty of the program is that the card can be used as often as needed.
The FamilyWize cards are accepted locally at: Wal-Mart Pharmacy (Lafayette & West Lafayette), Payless Pharmacy (Lafayette & West Lafayette), Marsh Pharmacy, K Mart Pharmacy, Osco Drug (Lafayette & West Lafayette), Meijer Pharmacy, Target, CVS Pharmacies (Lafayette & West Lafayette), Arnett Pharmacy & Special Services, & Walgreen Drug Store (West Lafayette)
Keep an eye out for more information about this program in our area and visit the FamilyWize website to learn more about how this program is helping people just like you all across the country.
